Speech of H.E. Mr. Vahram Kazhoyan,

Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam during the New Year official ceremony with the Members of Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations and Vietnam-Armenia Friendship Association

January 4, 2023

Dear Amb. Nguyen Phuong Nga, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO),

Dear Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan, Chairman of the Vietnam-Armenia Friendship Association (VAFA),

Dear friends, guests, ladies and gentlemen,

We have already said farewell to 2022, which was an important and commemorative year in the history of Armenian-Vietnamese relations. New 2023 is ahead of us with 361 days to go from today.

          Dear friends,

Friendship is not just a word; it represents real friendly deeds by people and nations, who are close to each other with their customs, mentality and ideology. The examples of such deeds are quite many in the history of friendship between Armenia and Vietnam. As I have mentioned on numerous occasions in the past, Armenian-Vietnamese relations have a history of at least 800 years. However, in this context, the most important milestone was undoubtedly the historic visit of President Ho Chi Minh to Armenia from on July 21-23, 1959, which opened the new page in the relations between Armenia and Vietnam. Many Vietnamese know and remember the assistance of the Armenian people to the friendly Vietnam during its liberation movement for independence, as well as during the American war.

Members of Vietnam-Armenia Friendship Association are well aware that in the period of 1950-1990s almost 2,000 Vietnamese students have studied in the secondary and higher educational institutions of Armenia. They have till these days preserved fond memories of Armenia, the Armenian people, as well as, of course the Armenian Ararat brandy.

The opening of the Embassy of Armenia in Hanoi gave a new impetus to the further development and deepening of cooperation with Vietnam. Embassy of Armenia is actively working in the direction of the development and deepening of relations with Vietnam in all spheres since 2013. It indicates the high level of cooperation in the political sphere between the two countries. We are expecting the reciprocal step from the Vietnamese side with the opening of the Embassy of Vietnam in Yerevan.

          Dear ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to particularly mention the role of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations and the Vietnam-Armenia Friendship Association, represented here by the the Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga and Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan, as well as other members of VUFO and VAFA, in the achievements of developing friendship and relations between our countries. I am confident that our further joint work will contribute to the further development of relations between Armenia and Vietnam.

Charitable support during the COVID-19 pandemic provided to Armenia by our Vietnamese friends from VAFA, was highly appreciated in Armenia.

          Ladies and gentlemen,

Unfortunately, Armenia and the Armenian people met this New Year in difficult conditions: around 127 square kilometers of the internationally recognized territory of Armenia are occupied by Azerbaijan. They are currently blocking the Lachin corridor, thus closing the only lifeline road connecting Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh, and creating a humanitarian disaster for more than 120,000 Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh, due to the shortage of the first necessity items, especially food and medicine.

          Dear friends,

I am confident that Armenian-Vietnamese friendship, which has passed through many challenges over history, as well as partnership relations between Armenia and Vietnam, will continue strengthening and developing in the future, based on mutual trust and respect, to the benefit of our two countries and friendly peoples.

Taking this opportunity, I would like to congratulate everyone on the occasion of the New Year 2023 and the upcoming Lunar New Year, the year of the Cat. I wish you, your families and relatives good health, happiness and prosperity, as well as peace for our countries and our planet.

          Happy New Year,

          Thank You.
